On phones and tablets
What changes when you open Ganttry on a phone or a tablet, and which work each size of screen suits.
Ganttry runs in the browser on a phone or tablet as well as on a desktop. The whole app adapts to the screen — nothing needs pinching — but the layout changes, and some work suits a bigger screen better than others.
Where to find it
There is nothing to switch on. Open Ganttry in your phone's or tablet's browser and it lays itself out for the screen. A phone here means a touch device 700 px wide or narrower.
On a phone
- A bar along the bottom replaces the project tabs, so you switch views with a thumb: Home, Schedule, Projects, Work and Calendar. Without a company account there is no Home; a Field account gets My tasks, Work and Calendar. The Dashboard is Tools ▾ → Dashboard.
- ☰ opens the sidebar as a drawer over the page. When the top row has no room for the scope control, it moves to the top of the drawer.
- The editor shows one pane at a time. The grid gets the whole screen, and the pane toggle swaps to the chart and back.
- The editor's top row is trimmed. It drops the theme toggle and ? — both stay in Tools ▾ under App, and your avatar menu keeps Help & support… — and it shortens the project name, so your avatar, with Sign out in its menu, is always on screen. When a Draft project's chip shows, the chip shortens too (tap it to publish), and on a phone up to 480 px wide the project's name steps aside for it, so the bell and your avatar stay on the row; File ▾ → Project settings… still opens the project's settings. Full pages keep their top row as it is.
- The toolbar folds. The less-used buttons move into a ⋯ menu instead of scrolling off the edge; Views stays on the toolbar. See The editor's toolbar.
- Rows of action buttons show only their icons, and some fold into a ⋯ menu; a button that opens a menu keeps its words.
- Big dialogs open full-screen — Update progress…, importing, Cash flow… and the like. File ▾ → Open project… opens the Open a project page: tap anywhere on a row to open it, or its ⋯ for its menu.
- The Work board snaps one column at a time, with the next column peeking in. The dots underneath jump straight to a status, each card carries a status chip, and the ⋮ menu on a card changes its status without dragging. Dragging still works — the board scrolls when you reach the edge.
- Tables pan inside their own card on the Company pages, with the first column pinned, and the users list turns into cards.
- Home folds its Inbox into a strip above the table, and Import… and Projects into a ⋯ menu. Each project row keeps its own ⋯, a full fingertip wide.
- Installed as an app, the page starts below the phone's status bar, and on a phone held sideways the top row and the full pages keep their controls clear of the camera.
On a tablet
Tablets with real touch — 1024 × 768, 834 × 1112 and 1180 × 820, either way up — get the desktop pages without sideways scrolling:
- Rows of action buttons shrink their labels to icons, and then fold into a ⋯ menu, as the space runs out.
- On the editor, the top row gives way from the middle: the project name shrinks first and the project's tabs scroll in their own strip last, so the save chip, the Draft chip, the bell and your avatar stay on screen.
- On a touch tablet between 701 and 1,199 px wide, the editor's top row is trimmed as on a phone, and its controls get full-height tap areas at least 40 px tall.
- Below 900 px wide, the sidebar is a drawer, as on a phone.
Side panes
On Home, My tasks, the Calendar, Work, Roster & equipment and Crew planning, the side pane sits beside the list (the Calendar's beside the month) wherever there is room — on a tablet, a computer or a phone held on its side. It stays in view as the page scrolls, and scrolls on its own. On Work, the Calendar, Roster & equipment and Crew planning, a task, a day or a row you pick opens the pane at its top.
On a phone held upright the pane is a strip above the list, and Work opens a task in a sheet instead. There, picking a person or a machine on Roster & equipment, or a row on Crew planning, brings the page up to the strip.
Turning a phone keeps what you opened in view. Turned upright, each strip opens at its top, and with a person or a machine open on Roster & equipment, or a row on Crew planning, the page goes up to it. Turned on its side with a task open on Work, the task's details stay beside the list.
Tap to read
On a computer, some words and marks explain themselves when you point at them: an Old dates hint, a ⚠ chip or a line ending in ? (such as 2 Laborer?) on the Work page, a grayed-out Status ▾ on the Work board, a day's demand or a NOT NAMED count on People, or a score or "—" in Company's projects table. On a touch screen, tap one instead: its sentence opens in a note under its row, for example "This list may be out of date. Open this project's Work view to refresh it." When there is no room below, as at the bottom of a list, the note opens above it instead, so what you tapped stays under your finger. A second tap, Esc or a tap anywhere else closes it, and only one is open at a time.
On a tablet, Tools ▾ shows no hover lines, only its labels (and Ctrl+K beside Go to…), and a tap runs the item; the line each item shows on hover is under it in Go to instead.
Text size
A larger text size — 150 % in Safari's text size menu, or your phone's larger text setting — or a wider font doesn't break the field pages: My tasks, the Day plan and a crew link wrap rather than cut or overlap. People folds its window and sort buttons into ⋯ sooner, rather than let them overlap.
If a page stops loading
- A stalled connection. My tasks, the Calendar, the Day plan, the TODAY card and People stop waiting after 30 seconds and say what didn't load — for example
Could not load your tasks — check your connection, with Retry — instead of loading forever. What a page showed before stays on screen. - A browser that blocks website data (in Safari, the Block All Cookies setting). Without a company account and in the public demo, Ganttry keeps your projects in the browser, so it can't open there and says: "Ganttry can't open here: this browser is blocking website data. Allow cookies and website data for this site (in Safari, turn off Block All Cookies), then reload." Crew links and itineraries keep nothing in the browser and open as usual.
What works best where
- A phone suits the field: checking My tasks, moving work along the Work board, updating progress and looking at the Calendar. See Work, My tasks and the calendar.
- A tablet runs the same pages as a desktop, touch-sized.
- A desktop or laptop suits building and changing a schedule: the grid and the Gantt side by side, the sidebar pinned beside full pages, and every toolbar label showing.
- The Master plan needs room: at 780 px wide or narrower it shows only "The master plan needs a wider screen." — three weeks of dates side by side don't fit — with buttons to Projects and Work.
- People works on a phone in its own way: instead of the grid it shows one day at a time, with the week's days to tap between, and lists who is booked where that day. Each trade's head carries that day's demand, such as
2 need · 1 booked · 0 free, red when even everyone free falls short. Tap a person to see their day and book them. See People.
Who can use it
Everyone. The pages you see on a phone are the same pages your account can open on a desktop — see Who can see and do what.
Good to know
- On a phone or tablet, the work pages also offer to install Ganttry as an app on your home screen. See Work, My tasks and the calendar.
- Tap targets on touch screens are larger — see Accessibility.
- The ☰ button works at every width; on a wide screen it folds the sidebar instead of opening a drawer. See Getting around.
