Features › Projects and the editor
The editor's toolbar
The editor's two toolbar rows — the project's name and chips on top, the File, Export, Tools and Format menus and the everyday buttons below.
The editor has two toolbar rows. The top row says which project is open and how it stands; the bottom row holds four menus and the buttons you reach for all day. The menus keep their names as the window narrows — on a phone, Format ▾ moves into the ⋯ menu — and every button has a tooltip.
Where to find it
Open any project in the schedule — the Schedule tab, or a project from Recent in the sidebar. The toolbar sits across the top of the grid and Gantt.
The top row
The top row is the same dark row every page shares (see Getting around). On the editor it carries:
- The project's name. Click it to open Project settings: the project's name, company, status, start date, working calendar, critical threshold, Activity ID display and baselines, among others.
- The status chip — the project's status: Planning, Pending, Active, On hold or Complete. Clicking it opens Project settings too.
- The pane toggle — the grid only, the grid and the chart, or the chart only. Ganttry remembers your pick.
- Who else is viewing — teammates' avatars.
- The save chip — the live save state; click it for Save now, Save a version… and History…. See Saving, history and opening projects.
- The Draft chip, for a project in Draft. See Draft and Publish.
The bottom row
The bottom row starts with four menus:
- File ▾ — New project, Open project… (
Ctrl+O, the Open a project page), Import file…, Save a copy (JSON) (Ctrl+S), Share… and Project files… when you are signed in, and Project settings…. - Export ▾ — PDF…, Excel (.xlsx), CSV and MS Project XML (MSPDI). See Print and export.
- Tools ▾ — described below.
- Format ▾ — Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, Header row and Color & text… for the selected rows. See Colors and text.
Then come the direct buttons, in groups:
- Undo and Redo.
- Task (insert a task below the selection) and Delete.
- Outdent, Indent and Link (link the selected tasks finish-to-start).
- The Gantt view buttons: zoom out, zoom in, Fit (the whole project in the window), Today, Critical (highlight the critical path), Baseline (pick which baseline to draw, or off), Crew (the crew histogram under the chart) and Views (filters, saved views and the 3-week lookahead — see Filters, saved views and the 3-week lookahead).
Point at any button for its tooltip, which names its keyboard shortcut where it has one. The keyboard shortcuts page lists them all.
Tools ▾
Tools ▾ groups its items under three headings:
- This project — Dashboard, Crew planning, Book people (signed in, on a project you can edit, but not on a student's copy or a class board in Training), Update progress…, Calendars…, Shared coverage…, Schedule quality checks…, Cash flow…, What crews see… and Day notes… (when signed in), Save a version…, History…, Present to everyone viewing… (when signed in), and Save as a project template… (when signed in and allowed).
- Company — for signed-in office accounts: Roster & equipment, then Master plan and People if you have Master planning.
- App — Appearance (each click moves on to the next of Auto, which follows your device, Light and Dark), Keyboard shortcuts…, Help & support… and Go to… (
Ctrl+K).
Point at any Tools ▾ item for a line that says what it does — for example, Save a version… reads "Name and keep this plan as it is now". The menu shows no other text beside the labels, only Ctrl+K beside Go to…. On a touch screen there are no hover lines, and a tap runs the item; Go to shows the same lines under each command.
Where each one leads:
- Dashboard and Crew planning open this project's Dashboard and Crew planning pages; Roster & equipment and Master plan open Roster & equipment and the Master plan.
- People opens People, and Book people opens this project on it.
- Update progress… records actuals against a data date.
- Calendars… opens the work calendars — see Scheduling.
- Shared coverage…, Schedule quality checks… and Cash flow… each have their own page.
- What crews see… and Day notes… belong to Draft and Publish.
- Save a version… and History… are on Saving, history and opening projects.
- Presenting is on Getting around.
- Go to… opens Go to, to find a page, a command or a recent project by name.
As the window narrows
The direct buttons show text labels down to laptop widths. As the window narrows, the labels drop away in two steps; the icons, tooltips and menu names always stay. On a phone, the less-used buttons fold into a ⋯ menu (More tools) instead of scrolling off the edge — outdent, indent and link, the Format ▾ items, zoom, Fit to window, Scroll to today, Critical path, the baseline choice and Crew histogram. Views stays on the toolbar.
Who can use it
Admins and Editors use the editor and its toolbar; a Field account never opens the editor. Some items appear only when you are signed in to a company account, as noted above. See Who can see and do what.
Good to know
- Baseline is grayed out until the project has a baseline — see Baselines and variance.
- Share… makes a view-only link to the project; it needs a signed-in company account.
- Help & support is also the ? at the right of the top row, and in your avatar menu.
